From Clifton Anderson Art & Antiques
This gold lady’s ring, set with squared inlaid borders of white and black enameling, which frame the tuft of hair encased under a beveled crystal. The ring was worn, likely on a ribbon, by Elizabeth Schuyler in memory of her late husband, Alexander Hamilton or by one of their two daughters, Angelica Hamilton or Eliza Hamilton Holly.
The inside top of ring is inscribed in period script, Alexander Hamilton Ob: July 12th 1804 A: 46 yrs. 6. Mos. The ring descended directly through the Hamilton-Schuyler family until 2009. Evidently Mrs. Hamilton or a daughter suspended the ring by an intact broad soldered gold link, which would have had a lariat pass through enabling the wearer to hang it from her neck. The ring shows significant wear from the friction point at the loose loop suggesting it was a frequent adornment to her costume within the half century after Hamilton’s death. There are some scattered, mostly shallow losses to the enamel, otherwise fine.
