lesbianartandartists: “Since their inception, women’s baseball and softball teams have been tacitly understood as ideal situations for lesbian socializing. Because both gay and straight women played on the teams, lesbians were able to fraternize without the fear of being ‘outed’. Betty Hoy Jetter, a ball player in the AAGPBL [All-American Girls Professional Baseball League] and founder of an all-lesbian softball team in Los Angeles, donated numerous baseball uniforms to the June L. Mazer Lesbian Archives in West Hollywood in 1993. One of these uniforms is pictured here, along with team photographs from the late 1940s.” Zemula Barr, “Archive,” in Cruising the Archive: Queer Art and Culture in Los Angeles, 1945-1980 (Los Angeles: One National Gay and Lesbian Archives, 2011), 25.
