Gardens of Abbotsford
Abbotsford House, The Borders, Scotland.
The Borders, Scotland. Reputed to be Sir Walter Scott’s favourite viewpoint (and so named after him), with a view of the River Tweed in the valley below and the Eildan Hills in the distance.
Shambles and Snickelways
York, England. “Pepper” the Shambles shop dog, who figured out she could get unlimited ear rubs if she sat on the front step. Adorable!
Cheung Chau, Hong Kong. A barn swallow sifting through pine needles to build its nest (along with a good helping of mud).
Chinese (Light-Vented) Bulbul
Cheung Chau, Hong Kong. These birds are always immediately recognisable, thanks to their striking black-and-white crowns!
Ying Fat Building Courtyard, Quarry Bay, Hong Kong.
Chinese White Dolphin
Fan Lau, Hong Kong. An young adult Indo-Pacific humpbacked dolphin (known locally as Chinese white dolphins) comes up for a breath. These beautiful beasties are born dark grey and gradually losing their colouring as they mature, giving them their distinctive pink appearance.
Tung Chung, Hong Kong. A immaculate-looking little egret in full breeding plumage (blue-violet facial skin and feather plumes on its nape and back).
Common Kingfisher Tung Chung, Hong Kong. A common kingfisher looking to catch breakfast near Tung Chung pier. A splash of colour on an otherwise grey and hazy morning!
Late Night Noodles
Wan Chai, Hong Kong.
Isle of May, Scotland. A male grey seal displaying an open mouth threat, a common aggressive behaviour.
Isle of May, Scotland. A weaned grey seal pup that became interested in a snail shell, which it inspected by stroking its whiskers (vibrissae) over the whorls.
Isle of May, Scotland. A female grey seal seeing off a weaner that came too close to her pup. The weaner made sure to hold its vulnerable hind flippers (which have little to no layer of protective blubber) well away from the female’s sharp teeth.
Watcher Of The Skies
Isle of May, Scotland. A grey seal pup that stopped to watch a gull circling overhead.
Watcher On The Rise
Isle of May, Scotland. A grey seal pup peering curiously over the lip of a rise.
Edward Youde Aviary, Hong Kong.
